5* Book Review – Behind Closed Doors by B. A. Paris

26050845Everyone knows one of those couples who seem to have it all. They travel to exotic lands, have a beautifully presented home and are head over heels in love. Jack and Grace are that couple. Jack, a handsome, successful lawyer whisked Grace off her feet just at the moment when she felt it would never happen, and who in turn dotes on her husband-to-be. But all is not as it seems. In fact, it is crushingly different.

Written from Grace’s point of view, there is a haunting tone to her thoughts from the very beginning, but something is different in her actions. Very quickly, the reader picks up that something is not quite right with Jack and Grace’s relationship. As the chapters switch between past and present, the reader can begin to piece together their story, all the time doubting that such a perfect beginning could take such a dramatic turn. As each piece of new twisted information is provided, you realise that it is going to get shockingly worse before it gets better. This very clever technique means that you are gripped instantly from the first chapter and pulled through page by page.

Jack’s character demonstrates how easily those close to us can be manipulated into believing what they choose to portray. Grace soon discovers how almost impossible it is to convince those around her that life is not perfect, that the man she married is evil, and the reader gets a creeping sense of dread when Jack is always one step ahead. Disturbing and chilling to read, you will sometimes not know whether you want to turn away, but intensely gripping, the anticipation will mean that you will always want to know what is going to happen next.

As past and present begin to get closer and closer together, the story reaches the ultimate climax, and you will be left wondering if the amount of pages left will be enough to satisfy what has been a dark and emotional roller-coaster ride of a book. All I will say is that the ending is certainly not a disappointment!

Behind Closed Doors, by B. A Paris is exceptionally well written. In the end, and as the title suggests, you will forever wonder what really happens behind closed doors. Highly recommended. 5*
